Liviu Marinescu concert - April 26th
|
Three new works by Romanian modern composer Liviu Marinescu will be featured in a concert presented by the Nimbus Ensemble on April 26, 8pm, at the Wilshire United Methodist Church, 4350 Wilshire Blvd. (between Highland & Western), Los Angeles 90010.
Marinescu's works have been performed throughout the world by prominent orchestras and ensembles, including Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Czech Bohuslav Martinu Symphony, Orchestra 2001, and the Bucharest National Radio Orchestra. His debut at the Bucharest International New Music Festival when he was 21 years old, was noted by the Parisian newspaper Le Monde de la Musique, which described one of the concerts he co-organized with other young composers and artists as being "inventive in its evolution, content, and substance," and promoting an "anti-conformist view." Soon after, the Bucharest newspaper Actualitatea Muzicala acknowledged that Liviu Marinescu "not only has the intelligence and maturity expected from a modern artist, but also the ability to express himself through sounds in a convincing way." In the U.S., his music has been praised by numerous publications, including The Philadelphia Inquirer, Washington Post and Los Angeles Times, while the critics of The Strad, Strings Magazine, and New York Concert Review recognized its "real expressive power and attractive rhetoric," "majestic assertiveness," and "startling moments."
In recent years, he has received awards and commissions from Harvard University, the American Music Center, Meet the Composer, and has been a guest composer at the George Enescu International Festival in Bucharest. Since immigrating to the U.S. in 1994, Liviu Marinescu has taught courses in music composition and theory at Cleveland State University, University of Maryland, West Chester University, and Concordia College. Currently, he is the Chair of Music Composition and Theory studies at California State University, Northridge.
